If you’re anything like us, you skipped the Golden Globes to binge Downton Abbey or something else. After all, Ricky Gervais is charming, but the speeches are a little self-indulgent. And the Hollywood Foreign Press doesn’t always get it right. And last night’s list of winners and losers proves it. But it’s still interesting to run through the winners and start prepping for the real Olympics: The Oscars.
So, here’s the round-up from last night.
Best Motion Picture – Drama: 1917 (nothing against WWI stories, but The Two Popes really deserved it)
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (we would have given it to Rocketman)
Actress – Drama: Renée Zellwiger for Judy (Liza Minnelli is going to be livid; she hated the flick)
Actor – Drama: Joaquin Phoenix (yeah, we’ll concede that one)
Actress – Musical or Comedy: Awkwafina (oh sure, why not)
Actor – Musical or Comedy: Taron Egerton for Rocketman (Ok. But Eddie Murphy should have been lauded)
Supporting Actress: Laura Dern (they got this right)
Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt (No. Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci…any of those performances was more worthy)
Best Director – Motion Picture: Sam Mendes (1917) (Martin Scorsese anyone?)
Best Screenplay – Motion Picture: Quentin Tarantino (Sure. We’ll give it to him)
Best Motion Picture – Animated: Missing Link (Given that it wasn’t a sequel and original, yes.)
Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language: Parasite (are you really paying attention at this point?)
Best Television Series – Drama: Succession (Dude, THE CROWN!)
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy: Fleabag (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel or The Politician. Also note: not a single nominee was on broadcast television)
Television Actress – Drama: Olivia Coleman for The Crown (Finally, they got one right)
Television Actor – Drama: Brian Cox for Succession (Rami Malek for Mr Robot deserved it)
Television Actress – Musical or Comedy: Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag (Ugh. Rachel Brosnahan is epic and should have won)
Television Actor – Musical or Comedy: Ramy Youssef for Ramy (Nope. Ben Platt for The Politician)
Television Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette (Fine. But Meryl Streep? Helena Bonham Carter? Come. On.)
Television Supporting Actor: Stellen Skarsgard for Chernobyl. (Works for us.)
The only moments worth watching: Tom Hanks receiving the Cecil B. deMille Award and Ellen DeGeneres receiving the Carol Burnett Award. You can watch them below.
